Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, are unusual so far south -- the colorful, 20-minute display was a rare sighting caused by a recent solar storm. This video [go to link for video] was captured by the color allsky camera at the Automated Lunar and Meteor Observatory, or ALaMO, at the Marshall Center in Huntsville, Ala.

When we first moved to Ashland there was a big solar event and the Northern Lights were visible right here. It looked like there was a big forest fire behind Grizzly Peak. No shimmering curtains or wild colors but it was very impressive. At one point I stood with my back to Grizzly and looked straight up and the lights extended beyond the center of the sky above and I could see them in front of me a bit. Very cool. ;~)
